Bremer has announced appointing 20-35 prominent Iraqis to a national council as a first step to a constitutional body. Preference is given to those Iraqis who remained in Iraq rather than exiles and include a Shiite cleric. Now I can’t speak to the individuals (none have been named yet) but this is a step in the right direction. Chabalai is a Pentagon gadfly with few real connections in Iraq, relying on him in the past has led to misinformation, and relying on him in the future could be dangerous.
